Cuts run deep for Stephen Jones

SAN ANTONIO -- While the decisions to cut Marion Barber, Leonard Davis, Roy Williams and Marc Colombo appeared easy considering the salary-cap savings the Cowboys will have in 2011, there is an emotional side to moves like this.

“Anytime you cut guys who’ve been a big part of your team it’s tough,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “But unfortunately that’s the nature of the business.”

Jones praised the energy Barber brought to the team and the leadership Colombo demonstrated in the offensive line meeting rooms.

As for Williams, the homecoming for the Odessa native never went as planned. The Cowboys gave up three draft picks and $27 million guaranteed to get Williams from Detroit.

“This is not an exact science, this business,” Jones said. “There’s things that happen all the time whether it’s here or other places that it doesn’t work out. That’s unfortunate, but we just move one.”
