Dez Bryant, Terence Newman not practicing

IRVING, Texas --Dez Bryant and Terence Newman will did not practice Thursday, putting their availability for Sunday's game at San Francisco in question.

Bryant has a bruised thigh, and Newman is recovering from a groin injury suffered in training camp.

In 2008, Newman missed the season opener because of a groin injury suffered in camp and returned to play the next three games. He aggravated the injury and required sports hernia surgery that knocked him out for five weeks.

The Cowboys do not want to rush Newman back and have another scenario like 2008 happen again.

UPDATE via Tim MacMahon (11:40 a.m.): Terence Newman is working hard on the side. He's sprinting, cutting, etc. But he's not cleared to play or practice.

For Bryant, it continues a pattern from his rookie year in which he missed practice time with assorted injuries -- ribs, ankle, back and ankle again -- after missing most of training camp with a high ankle sprain. He managed to play in 12 games before suffering a fractured right ankle at Indianapolis.
