Mike Jenkins flying to Florida for checkup

OXNARD, Calif. -- Mike Jenkins is on his way to Pensacola, Fla., to have his surgically-repaired right shoulder examined by Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation in January.

The Cowboys and Jenkins planned the trip a few weeks ago and coach Jason Garrett called the visit a “normal follow up.”

The team hopes to have a more detailed report on where Jenkins is in his recovery from the surgery and when he might be cleared to return to practice. He is on the active physically unable to perform list and would need to pass a physical before being cleared. Garrett said the hope is that Jenkins could play in some preseason games, but Jenkins said when camp opened that he was unsure if he would be able to play in the Sept. 5 regular-season opener at the New York Giants.

“His conditioning is certainly getting better,” Garrett said. “His strength and range of motion are getting better, but Dr. Andrews did the surgery so this is a normal follow up to get his take where (Jenkins) is and a better feel for how we want to proceed.”

If Jenkins is not ready for the regular season, he could miss the first six games of the season.
