OXNARD, Calif. -- Cowboys coach Jason Garrett updated the media regarding the availability of some injured players and said nose tackle Jay Ratliff won't play in the preseason opener at Oakland.
Ratliff is battling plantar fasciitis and is participating in walkthroughs but not practices. His being held out is mainly a precaution, but the Cowboys want to see him in a full practice before putting him in a game.
"We want to see him practice a little bit," Garrett said. "I would not anticipate him for Oakland. He hasn't practiced yet, so we're hopeful he'll get back out there and start easing his way back into it, putting his shoulder pads on a little bit, moving around. He's doing a really good job in the walkthroughs. You don't want to take backwards steps with these guys by saying we need them out there today and then we lose them for two weeks, particularly guys who are experienced and productive as he's been throughout his career. (We're) trying to be a little cautious, and we want him moving forward in coming back."
*Mackenzy Bernadeau will do team drills. While he's doubtful for Oakland, will get the bulk of his time at guard. "Not going to put him out there before he's ready to play," Garrett said.
*Mario Butler missed practice because his significant other is having baby.
*John Phillips will practice today but there is concern about his availability for Oakland. "We have to protect him from himself a little bit," Garrett said.
*Danny Coale will practice today but it's doubtful if he'll go at Oakland.
*Matt Johnson is getting walkthrough work but won't play at Oakland.
