David Arkin takes first-team center snaps

OXNARD, Calif. – Phil Costa was unable to finish Friday’s practice because of lower back stiffness that will require an MRI, so David Arkin took over.

A week ago Arkin had never snapped a football in his life. On Friday, he was the starting center.

“I had a couple of days there where I put a few on the ground, but I feel like I’m getting more confident in it, so it’s good,” Arkin said.

Arkin did not have a poor exchange with Tony Romo, but a couple of shotgun snaps were a little high.

The Cowboys are not looking for any center help at the moment, preferring to let Arkin take the second-team work when Costa is healthy. Pat McQuistan took a few center snaps Friday with the backups, and the team said it will give guard Mackenzy Bernadeau a look in camp once he gets accustomed to practicing after missing so much time in the offseason.

“There’s always pressure,” Arkin said. “You’ve really got to get it right. It doesn’t matter if it’s first team, second team or third team.”
