DeMarco Murray will get more work, but not a lot

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jason Garrett saw Emmitt Smith succeed for years despite not getting a lot of preseason work.

Now the Cowboys' coach, Garrett is employing a similar philosophy for DeMarco Murray.

Through two preseason games Murray has five carries for 12 yards, playing in only a series in each game.

Garrett said Murray will get more work Saturday vs. St. Louis.

“We want to inch him up as the preseason goes, but still it will be a limited number,” Garrett said. “We don’t want him banging away out there too long, but at the same time we want to make sure we give him enough chances to get into the rhythm that he needs to get into. That’s the challenge at every position, but maybe particularly at that position because that position is so physical and those guys take so much pounding. You don’t want to put him in a situation where he leaves it all out there on a preseason game field. We need to get him ready for the start of the regular season.”
