Source: Cowboys to release Shaun Chapas

IRVING, Texas -- With a number of roster moves to make to reach the 53-man limit, the Cowboys have decided to release fullback Shaun Chapas, according to a source.

The move is somewhat surprising because Jason Witten is uncertain for Wednesday's season opener at the New York Giants due to a spleen injury and Chapas has the ability to play a major role on special teams.

Chapas was a seventh-round pick last year and spent most of the season on the practice squad before a late-season call up to the active roster.

The Cowboys signed veteran free-agent Lawrence Vickers in March but Chapas had a solid training camp and improved as a lead blocker. He could be a target for a team looking for a fullback and special teamer off the waiver wire.
