New C Ryan Cook will practice Saturday

IRVING, Texas -- Not only were the Cowboys evaluating their own players in the preseason finale vs. Miami, but also the Dolphins center that night, Ryan Cook, which led to a trade for the veteran offensive lineman.

Cook received his iPad playbook Friday and will be on the practice field Saturday.

Coach Jason Garrett said the Cowboys have had their eyes on Cook in the past and knew the Dolphins would have to make a move with some of their offensive lineman, so they chose to fork over a 2013 seventh-round pick instead of hoping to sign him as a free agent.

It is too early to say Cook could dress as a backup against the New York Giants on Wednesday. David Arkin started the first three preseason games at center and took some work there vs. the Dolphins before moving to guard. If Cook is not ready, then Arkin would serve as Costa’s backup in Week 1.

“We’re going to see how he fits,” Garrett said. “He does have a history and experience snapping the football so that’s certainly an asset for him, but his position flex throughout the offensive line and experience as a veteran offensive lineman certainly helps him.”
