Newly hired Saints head coach Sean Payton was on Dallas' coaching staff prior to being hired by New Orleans, and he spent extensive time with Romo as part of a group of coaches who helped develop the QB. But Bill Parcells, then the Cowboys' head coach, didn't want to trade Romo.
The teams meet Sunday at Cowboys Stadium. After Thursday's practice, Romo was asked what might have been if Parcells agreed to the trade.
"I'm not into looking into guessing about what would happen; that stuff happens the way it's supposed to," Romo said. "When I look back, I was lucky to be around Bill when I was young. It was great for a lot of guys' career."
This is the first time Payton will not coach the Saints against the Cowboys since becoming New Orleans' coach, and Romo wasn't interested in discussing it.
"Yeah, I'm sure it will be [strange]," Romo said. "He's always been out there for the New Orleans game."
Does Romo see how much the Saints have missed their coach when watching them on tape?
"I don't watch their offense," Romo said
Payton is suspended this season for his role in the bounty scandal. Saints quarterback Drew Brees said it's been difficult to not have someone on the sideline he considers a mentor. Brees said the Saints have missed Payton.
Romo was asked whether it would be hard for him to play minus his head coach.
"I haven't really thought about it, honestly," he said. "It hasn't happened to us."
