To help preview who might be on the Dallas Cowboys’ board for the NFL draft, ESPNDallas.com has identified five players at five key positions that we’d like to learn more about. Along those lines, we’ve asked former Cowboys assistant coach Glenn “Stretch” Smith – the official scout of Galloway & Company – to study tape of each player and give his thoughts.

No. 3 defensive lineman: Kawann Short

Position: Defensive tackle

Height/weight: 6-foot-3, 299 pounds

School: Purdue

Why he’s on the radar: He is productive, finishing his collegiate career with 18 sacks and 48 tackles for loss. He performed well in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, as well as at the Senior Bowl. He is a crafty player, according to some reports, but he moves better than people think. One possible tiebreaker in the Cowboys' evaluation process that could favor Short: he was a two-time captain for the Boilermakers. Jason Garrett always talks about having the “right kind of guys.”

Projection: Late first round, early second

Stretch Truths: It’s frustrating to watch this kid on film, as he’s a feast-or-famine type player. … Will flash some quickness and hands to punch and shed. … Lacks lower strength to bull rush or get any pocket push at the point of attack. … Does not show the speed when pursuing the chase. … Soft body; skinny lower. … Would be tough to pick him early. … In my eyes, he could go early, but at times looks like a free agent on film.
