Mackenzy Bernadeau's focus is on Giants

IRVING, Texas -- Mackenzy Bernadeau did not want to get introspective on what the Dallas Cowboys’ recent addition of Brian Waters meant for his playing time.

Bernadeau will likely start at right guard Sunday against the New York Giants, which would be his 17th straight start for the Cowboys and 14th at right guard. Waters is likely to be inactive against the Giants after just three practices, but his role will increase, perhaps as early as Week 2 on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I’m here to work,” Bernadeau said. “He’s a great addition to our team. He’s a great player, and I’ve learned a lot from him just speaking to him. He’s a great guy. But I’m focused on the Giants.”

Ronald Leary will make the first start of his career at left guard against the Giants, and is coming off recent knee surgery. As much as the Cowboys like his potential, Leary is by no means a given yet, which could mean Waters and Bernadeau could be the starting guards at some point.

Bernadeau did not practice last week because of an ankle injury, but he was not on the injury report this week.

“It’s the best I’ve felt in a while,” Bernadeau said, “so I’m excited for the game.”
