Long-hitting Daly remains fan favorite

FORT WORTH, Texas -- No matter John Daly’s status on the leader board, he remains a fan favorite.

Daly’s gallery of about 100 was noticeably larger than most for Friday morning's second round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial included 60-year-old Arlington resident Steve Armstrong.

“I don’t know how many more times I’ll get to see him,’’ Armstrong said.

Armstrong missed Daly’s opening tee shot, but caught up with his threesome at the first green and followed along outside the ropes. Daly was easy to spot in pink slacks with black checks.

Daly bogeyed four of his first five holes on Friday and even a stretch of four straight threes to close the front nine still left him in danger of missing the cut. He is two-over for the day and the tournament with two holes remaining.

“He’s still one of the biggest hitters on Tour, even at his age,’’ Armstrong said. “He out-hits the younger guys. I like that. I wish I could do it.

“He’s a free swinger. Physically, he looks good with the weight he has lost.’’

Armstrong was asked if he could offer Daly any advice.

“He smokes a cigarette every hole so my advice would be to quit smoking,’’ said Armstrong, who gave up the habit 25 years ago.

“He’ll live longer.’’
