Hunter Mahan dislikes Nelson course

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Hunter Mahan raves about Colonial Country Club.

TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas, home of next week’s HP Byron Nelson, not so much.

“They should blow up the course and start over,’’ a candid Mahan said Sunday following a closing round of even par 70 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. “I’m not the only one that thinks it.’’

Mahan finished tied for 10th at 5-under and confirmed afterward that he would skip the Nelson next week.

“It is a course I don’t play very well,’’ Mahan said. “I don’t enjoy playing it. I think my best finish there is 42nd. This time of year, I need to conserve energy and play courses where I’ve had success.’’

The irony of a Dallas-area golfer not playing in the Dallas area isn’t lost on Mahan, No. 18 in the World Golf Ranking.

“Dallas has a lot of great courses. Las Colinas is what it is. Dallas deserves a world class field.

“Everything else about the tournament is fantastic. I love the Las Colinas location and the job the Salesmanship Club does.’’
