Colt Knost in U.S. Open; Jordan Spieth next in line

Former SMU golfer Colt Knost was added to the U.S. Open field, and Texas freshman and former Dallas Jesuit phenom Jordan Spieth is next in line.

The USGA sets aside five spots for players among the top 60 in the world rankings who don't qualify for the U.S. Open in other ways. Only two of those spots were needed, leaving openings for three alternates.

The first three alternates were Justin Hicks, Kyle Thompson and Knost. Speith moves up to the first alternate spot for the event, but he's running out of time. The first round tees off Thursday at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
