McKinney Boyd earned a berth in Saturday’s Class 5A girls soccer state championship game with a 3-0 shutout of Katy Seven Lakes in a state semifinal Thursday afternoon at Georgetown’s Birkelbach Field.
Boyd (28-0-3), No. 2 nationally in ESPN RISE winter season rankings, scored twice in the final four minutes of the first half and added an insurance goal midway in the second half.
A pair of juniors, Kelley Monogue and Meghan Streight, scored at 3:46 and at :52 respectively. Well-placed corner kicks by sophomore Caity Heap led to both goals.
Junior defender Alex Beck went high to the left corner of the net for Boyd’s final goal.
Seven Lakes (18-9-2) was limited to two shots on goal. The shutout was the 20th of the season for Boyd and its third of the playoffs.
Boyd, Class 4A state champion in 2008, advances to Saturday’s 11 a.m. title game against Conroe The Woodlands (29-2). The Woodlands defeated Austin Bowie, 1-0.
With one more win, Boyd would become the first undefeated girls 5A state soccer champion since Plano West in 2001.
