Former DeSoto coach Claude Mathis has left the University of Houston less than a month after being hired because of personal reasons and has returned to DeSoto High School, according to a press release from the university.
Mathis' return to DeSoto has not been confirmed.
Mathis, who resigned in January and was hired as Houston's running backs coach, spent four seasons as the head coach at DeSoto, posting a 36-14 record and making four straight appearances in the state playoffs. Mathis guided the Eagles to the state quarterfinals in 2010, finishing 11-3. DeSoto went 10-2 last season and lost to Skyline in the second round of the playoffs.
DeSoto took applications for its had football coaching positions through Feb. 3. Athletic director Pam Deborde had said the plan was to bring in the top 10 to 12 applicants for interviews by the middle of this month with the hope of naming the new coach by Feb. 24.
