THE BIG QUESTION: Will Southlake Carroll's streak of eight straight district titles come to an end in 2010?

For the first time since Todd Dodge first patrolled the sidelines of Dragon Stadium, fans aren't sure what to expect from Southlake Carroll.

The Dragons return just one starter from a team that was unceremoniously dumped in the playoffs by Arlington Bowie. The players that take over are truly the product of head coach Hal Wasson, who enters his fourth season.

Whether Carroll stays among the state's elite in 2010 largely hinges on QB Daxx Garman. The Arizona commit gives the Dragons yet another Division I signal-caller, but he's new to the system as a transfer student from Oklahoma.

Hot on Carroll's heals in 7-5A are Coppell and Denton Guyer. Although head coach Joe McBride doesn't want his team to rest on what it accomplished last year, Coppell is widely considered the favorite in the district because it had a strong year in 2009. The Cowboys are the only team to beat Carroll in district play since Carroll moved up to 5A in 2002.

Denton Guyer is the district's darkhorse despite playing in its first year in Class 5A. Guyer has more Division I commitments than any other team in the district so far (four), including QB J.W. Walsh, who's arguably the best QB prospect in the state.

Denton Guyer QB J.W. Walsh participated in the prestigious Elite 11 QB camp over the summer. ... Coppell RB Cam McDaniel rushed for 1,210 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2009. ... Southlake Carroll RB Paul Stevenson is one of the few Dragons with experience, rushing for 380 yards and four touchdowns.

Denton Guyer and Saginaw move up to Class 5A for 2010, with Saginaw also playing under a new head coach in Mike Peters. ... Keller Fossil Ridge returns all 11 starters on defense and 18 of 22 total. ... Southlake Carroll is switching from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 defense.
