Mansfield manhandles in-city rival Summit

A dismal 2009 season seems like ancient history for the Mansfield Tigers.

A dominating performance on both sides of the ball paved the way for Mansfield’s 44-21 thumping of rival Mansfield Summit on Friday night before 9,000 fans at Vernon Newsom Stadium.

Senior running back Damon Bullock rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns to lead the offense for Mansfield (3-0).

The Tigers defense allowed only one touchdown and that didn’t come until the game’s final seven minutes with victory secured. Defensive back Gary Davis stopped a first-half threat with an interception. The Tigers forced a fumble at its 10 midway in the second period when its lead was only 14-6.

Summit (2-1), No. 10 in the ESPN Dallas Class 4A area poll, got a 76-yard punt return from Lewis Washington, but not much else in the first three quarters.
