Rockwall took the pole position in District 10-4A with just four games remaining in the regular season thanks to a convincing 57-40 win over McKinney on Tuesday.
Red-hot sophomore Hannah Hughes scored 26 points to pace Rockwall. She had 27 in Rockwall’s previous game -- a 53-50 win over Wylie -- and 19 before that.
Rockwall (24-6, 9-1) sits a game ahead of McKinney (19-9, 8-2) and McKinney North (17-9, 8-2). Rockwall will face North on Feb. 4 in a game that could decide the 10-4A title. North hosts McKinney on Friday.
Aside from Hughes' surge, junior Alyssa Lang has been a dominant force for Rockwall. She averages a double-double with 16.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
Its strong showing in district play hints at another long playoff run for Rockwall, the 2007 5A state champions and 2006 runner-ups. Rockwall has made it to at least the third round of the playoffs every season since its state title.
