No. 3 ALEDO (9-2) vs. No. 8 MANSFIELD SUMMIT (10-1)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Burleson Stadium, Burleson
What: Class 4A Division II Region I area playoff
When we saw them last: Aledo quarterback Matthew Bishop completed 21-of-23 passes for 373 yards and four touchdowns in a 59-10 pummeling of 6-5 Fort Worth Dunbar in a bi-district playoff at Aledo. Calvin Burns rushed for 202 yards and five touchdowns in Summit's 46-31 bi-district triumph over 7-4 Waco.
Last in the playoffs: Aledo won its second consecutive Class 4A Division II state championship by routing La Marque, 69-34, in the 2010 title game. Summit lost to Birdville, 38-37, in an area playoff in 2010.
What’s at stake: The winner will face the winner of the area playoff between Canyon Randall (10-1) and El Paso Riverside (8-3) in a regional playoff.
Key matchup: No secret here. Aledo's record-setting running back Johnathan Gray impacts the game, either with long touchdowns runs or by drawing so much defensive attention that passing lanes open for efficient quarterback Bishop. Summit’s defense has been better against the pass than the rush (173 yards allowed per game).
Players to watch: Michael Mann is Aledo’s top receiver with 39 catches for 577 yards, and Gray is closing in on national career records for touchdowns, points and rushing yardage. Summit quarterback Ryan Cuevas has thrown for over 2,100 yards and 20 touchdowns. Jaylon Singleton leads the balanced Jaguars receiving corps with 40 catches for 569 yards.
Prediction: Aledo’s playoff experience (13 straight postseason wins) provides the separation between the two district champions: Aledo 38, Mansfield Summit 31.
