Mesquite Poteet's lead narrows in 15-4A race

With three regular season games remaining, Mesquite Poteet (22-7) has already assured a playoff berth, and a district championship remains within the Lady Pirates' grasp.

Poteet, No. 7 in the ESPNDallas.com Class 4A rankings under first-year head coach Rick Westfall, travels to Lancaster (21-4) for a key District 15-4A matchup at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Poteet, 11-2 in 15-4A, holds a half-game lead over Lancaster and West Mesquite, which are tied for second at 10-2.

Poteet defeated Lancaster, 55-46, in the first meeting Dec. 17 in Mesquite, but a 50-35 loss to West Mesquite on Tuesday tightened the race.

Shanovia Gamblin, a 5-foot-5 senior guard, leads the Lady Pirates with a 15.6 scoring average. Shambreka Jones, a 5-11 senior post, is averaging 8.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Gamblin a season ago was the District 15-4A Offensive Player of the Year, and Jones won the defensive award.
