Two DeSoto seniors signed national basketball letters of intent Wednesday.
Chelsea Gardner, a 6-3 forward, signed with the Kansas Jawhawks women‘s program. Last season, she averaged 7.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and two blocks for the Lady Eagles.
“Chelsea is a very skilled, long and athletic in the post,” said Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson. “She is excellent in transition as she can really get up and down the court. She is a capable scorer by either posting up or facing the basket. She will be a great asset to our inside game.”
Antwan Space, a 6-7 forward, signed with the men’s program at Florida State. As a sophomore, Space was a member of the Eagles’ Class 5A state championship team. Last year, he averaged 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
“It is a really good decision for me,’’ said Space, ranked as the nation‘s 75th best player in his class. “I am going to work as hard as I can to make the Seminoles a great team and a great program.’’
Joining Gardner at Kansas will be Duncanville’s Catherine “Bunny’’ Williams, a 6-1 forward. She averaged 13.5 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Pantherettes last season and chose Kansas over offers from Memphis and Kentucky.
“Bunny is very physical in the post,” said Henrickson. “She already has the physical presence and build of a college post player. She is versatile in that she can play facing the basket or with her back to the basket. In addition, she has a high basketball IQ and is a good communicator.”
