Pearce girls one win from back-to-back 4A soccer titles

The goal of back-to-back Class 4A girls state soccer titles is within reach for the Richardson J.J. Pearce Lady Mustangs

Pearce (23-4-2) earned a berth in the state title game with a 2-0 semifinal victory over Canyon Randall on Friday afternoon at Georgetown’s Birkelbach Field.

Pearce, the 2009 state champion, will face Boerne Champion (23-3-4) in Saturday’s 4 p.m. championship game. Champion defeated Waco Midway, 2-1, in Friday’s second semifinal.

A very young Randall team with nine freshmen and five sophomores on its 22-player roster kept Pearce scoreless through halftime.

Senior Taylor Mathews, a member of last year’s all- tournament team at state, scored six minutes after the intermission restart. Another senior, Kathryn Watson, added an insurance goal with 14 minutes remaining.

Pearce, No. 44 nationally in ESPN RISE winter rankings, recorded its 19th shutout of the season and its 14th in the last 15 games. In six state playoff matches, Pearce has surrendered only one goal.

Canyon Randall (18-4-2) came in averaging 4.1 goals per match.
