This year's Burleson boys basketball team is rewriting the history books, but coach Ted Tomchesson is trying to make sure the Elks aren't done.
With a 24-8 record and second-place finish in District 3-5A, this year's team is believed to be the first in school history to make the playoffs in back-to-back years. Burleson plays Mansfield Summit at 7 p.m. Tuesday at North Crowley.
"As far back as a lot of people can remember, we think that's true," Tomchesson said. "At least the last 40 years, if not 50."
The Elks set many goals this year, including getting double-digit district wins, which they did with a 10-2 record. Tomchesson said they set four additional goals toward the end of the season, and the only one left to accomplish is winning a playoff game.
"I'm not sure when that was done the last time," said Tomchesson, who knows it's at least been since the early 1990s.
Tomchesson has been working since 2001 to establish some consistency and tradition at Burleson. Even after some lean years at the beginning of his tenure, the Burleson administration stuck with him, Tomchesson said, and he believes the program is now reaping those benefits.
"Our chemistry is better than it's ever been this year," Tomchesson said.
