Hebron’s Cinderella march through the UIL softball playoffs came to a heartbreaking end on Friday.
Pearland scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth and defeated the Hawks, 1-0, in a Class 5A state semifinal at McCombs Field in Austin.
Sophomore pitcher Heather Stearns held Pearland (36-6-1) to only one hit, but two Hebron errors and a wild pitch accounted for the only run. Stearns (21-10) walked two and struck out eight.
Hebron (27-13) out-hit Pearland, 3-1, but couldn’t muster a run. Hits came from Kathryn Hollingsworth, Cecelia Constantino and Haley Norris.
The Hawks, making their first trip to the playoffs, finished fourth in District 6-5A before starting its playoff run with a 1-0 win over Keller in the bi-district round. Keller was ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN RISE at that time.
*Earlier on Friday, Denton Guyer lost to Waco Midway, 7-0, in a Class 4A state semifinal.
Guyer (34-6-2) was held to two hits by pitcher Kermitra Ward, who struck out 12. Amber Gonzalez and Layne Greenlee had the hits.
Midway (35-5-1) broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the third inning.
Guyer brought a 24-game winning streak into the game.
