Cuban considered blowing up Mavs

DALLAS -- The trade the Dallas Mavericks made couldn't have worked out much better.

The Mavs are 13-1 after pulling the trigger on the seven-player deal with the Washington Wizards that subtracted Josh Howard and added Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson.

A team that limped into the All-Star break suddenly looks like a legitimate contender. Good thing Mark Cuban didn't talk himself into making a much more drastic move.

Cuban admitted Wednesday night that he considered basically tearing down the team and rebuilding around Dirk Nowitzki. This was right around the time that he made a public declaration that the Mavs "suck right now."

Cuban recalled sitting in the shower at home and running through numbers in his head, pondering which direction the franchise should go.

"It's crossed my mind more than once that I actually might make some money," Cuban said of a fire sale. "But I put winning at a premium."

That's why the thoughts of going into rebuilding mode never left Cuban's shower until he shared them with reporters Wednesday night.
