Aggressive play gives Mavs early lead

DALLAS -- The Mavericks shot less than 30 percent for much of the first quarter, but took the lead and built on it with aggressive drives to the basket, getting into the bonus before the game was barely five minutes old.

An 8-0 run led by Dirk Nowitzki (eight points) and Caron Bulter (five points) gave the Mavs an 11-8 lead after trailing 8-3 and then a late spurt by Jason Kidd (five points) with a 3-pointer and a near-3 (his toe was on the arc), sparked an 8-4 finishing kick to end the first quarter.

George Hill started the game for the Spurs despite a right sprained ankle, but it was Tony Parker coming off the bench and being more effective with four points late in the quarter.
