Pistons chop 14-point deficit in half at end of 1

DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki was on fire early with nine quick points as the Dallas Mavericks bolted to an 11-0 lead and then 16-2 against the initally sluggish Detroit Pistons.

The Pistons did get to within 20-15 thanks to a spark from Tracy McGrady off the bench. McGrady, averaging 4.0 points and 1.5 assists, quickly hit a turnaround jumper and made two nice passes leading to easy buckets. And despite shooting just 35.3 percent from the field, the Pistons can feel good about traling 24-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Caron Butler had four points and three assists, including an alley-oop to Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood.
