Brian Cardinal sticks; could Novak return?

DALLLAS -- Reserve power forward Brian Cardinal will be sticking around with the Dallas Mavericks. His non-guaranteed contract became fully guaranteed Wednesday, the day the Mavs waived the small forward Steve Novak, who was also signed in the offseason to a non-guaranteed contract.

Cardinal found a niche in Dallas in limited playing time, bringing solid defense and 3-point shooting. He's become move valuable in the wake of injuries to Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler.

Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said Novak remains a possibility to return at some point. Teams can sign players to 10-day contracts starting Monday, meaning Dallas could also reach out to its D-League affiliate in Frisco for a player. The Mavs now have 14 players on the roster with one available spot.

"As a franchise we’re keeping our options open," Carslisle said. "We love Novak. What happened today doesn’t preclude the possibility of him returning at some point, possibly soon. We’ll see. We’ve got to evaluate a lot of things right now."
