Dirk Nowitzki likes Rudy Fernandez trade

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki likes the addition of shooting guard Rudy Fernandez, acquired by Dallas during the NBA Draft on Thursday.

"I think he fits in well," Nowitzki said. "He had a tough time there in Portland sometimes coming off the bench. He wanted out and I don't think the whole situation for him was that great. But when you come to a team that has great team chemistry and good leaders and veterans, guys always fit in well and they want to win and sacrifice and in this case, I think it's going to be great for the team."

The Mavericks weren't real excited about any particular player when they picked at Nos. 26 and 57, so they traded for Fernandez and the rights to Finnish point guard Petteri Koponen in a three-team deal with Portland and Denver.

Fernandez will make $2.1 million next season, the last in his rookie contract. He averaged 9.1 points during his three seasons in Portland.
