DALLAS -- Delonte West will start at shooting guard tonight's game against the up-tempo Denver Nuggets. Brought in to be the backup point guard, West replaced Vince Carter as the starter in the third quarter of Sunday's season opener.
Carter, an eight-time All-Star, didn't have much to say after the game about losing his starting spot. Asked about it, he said, "That's what he [coach Rick Carlisle] said.
Carlisle said that he went with West in the second half Sunday seeking more playmaking ability on the court. Carter had just five points and was 2-of-6 from the floor with two rebounds and three assists, but also three fouls in 21 minutes.
The question that arises with West starting is how Carlisle handles the backup point guard position. West could slide over when Jason Terry checks in, but at some point, Terry will likely have to play some point or Carlisle will have to trust Rodrigue Beaubois or Dominique Jones to eat some minutes.
The Nuggets will certainly test the Mavs' endurance. However, this is a game that Kidd could play big minutes after logging less than 30 against the Heat and with two days off before the season's first road game Thursday at Oklahoma City.
