Rapid Reaction: Suns 100, Mavs 94

How it happened: The Suns seized the lead with a 17-2 run in the third quarter -- when the starters were still in the game -- and held on during the summer league-like action late in the game.

The Suns had an 81-74 lead at the end of the third quarter, after which the starters on both sides took seats on the bench and became spectators.

Phoenix’s backcourt got the best of O.J. Mayo and Darren Collison. Jared Dudley (16 points) and Goran Dragic (12 points, six assists) were the Suns’ leading scorers. Mayo and Collison combined for only 14 points, all of which came from Mayo.

Chris Kaman led the Mavs with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Vince Carter added 15 points. Elton Brand scored 11 points, all in the first quarter, when the Mavs made a 15-0 run.

What it means: Not much. The Mavs are 2-2 this preseason, having lost two of three without Dirk Nowitzki. Coach Rick Carlisle will have great concerns about Dallas’ lackluster defense.

Play of the game: Delonte West had plenty of energy fresh off his one-day suspension. He went head-first into the third row while trying to save a ball under the Mavs’ basket earlier in the third quarter. He was unsuccessful, but it was entertaining nonetheless. Someone forgot to tell the hypercompetitive guard that preseason games don’t matter.

Stat of the night: The Mavs are counting on Collison to provide some scoring punch at point guard. That wasn’t the case Wednesday night, when he had a Jason Kidd-like line. Collison was scoreless on 0-of-2 shooting with six assists in 21 minutes.
