DALLAS -- Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts was asked about the Dallas Mavericks and he quickly pulled up his phone and read a quote from Rick Carlisle, his former boss. Carlisle was asked about the Trail Blazers and Stotts read Carlisle's quote and just insert "Mavs" instead of "Portland."
The former Mavericks assistant coach laughed, but there's some truth in what he says. Fans should see some similarities.
"They're the best offensive movement team that we've seen to this point," Carlisle said. "They've got skill guys. They're plyaing with a high motor. They've got a lot of weapons. We've got to be tied together to put ourselves in a good position."
That's how Stotts sees the Mavericks.
It's to be expected that the teams would resemble each other. After all, Stotts was an assistant under Carlisle the past four seasons before leaving to take the Portland job in August. He's not trying to get caught up in any sort of homecoming, though he's pleased to be back in Dallas.
"It's good to see a lot of familiar faces and friends," Stotts said. "I had four good years here. We won a championship. It's a lot of good memories. I just want to go out and win a game."
Carlisle smiled when asked about how Stotts is doing so far.
"He's doing a great job with them -- just a terrific job," Carlisle said.
Carlisle said having some of his former assistants take jobs elsewhere shows "we've done good things here and those guys have been very deserving of the opportunities and they're doing great jobs in those situations."
