Elton Brand out vs. Raptors due to birth of child

The Dallas Mavericks will be missing yet another of their frontcourt players tonight against the Toronto Raptors.

Elton Brand has left the team to be with his wife for the birth of their child. Coach Rick Carlisle told reporters that Brand, whose wife is in New York, plans to rejoin the team before Friday's game against the Knicks.

The Mavs are already without Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion, so their frontcourt depth will be tested against Toronto.

Carlisle wants to be careful with center Chris Kaman's minutes, but Kaman is likely to get his first start of the season. Troy Murphy, the veteran power forward signed this week, is another option to start if Carlisle wants to keep Kaman coming off the bench. Rookie center Bernard James is likely to get significant minutes, too.
