Buzz: Rodrigue Beaubois will get backup PG minutes

DALLAS – Rodrigue Beaubois’ performance Friday night resulted in at least a temporary tweak to the Mavericks’ rotation.

Beaubois will get the first crack at the backup point guard minutes in Sunday night’s game against the Suns, leaving Mike James in limbo on the final day of his second 10-day contract.

Beaubois, whose lack of development since an intriguing, exciting rookie season has been a major disappointment, displayed his talent by scoring 19 points in 16 minutes during Friday night’s loss to the Spurs. Coach Rick Carlisle considered it an easy decision to give Beaubois a chance to build on that performance despite the fact the four-year veteran didn’t play in the previous three games.

“That’s a no-brainer,” Carlisle said. “That’s gonna happen. And we want him to do the same thing. When I say the same thing, I don’t mean score more than a point per minute. I mean get out there and have a dynamic, athletic impact on the game.

Added owner Mark Cuban: “It’s nice to see. It’s nice to know it’s still there. Now, we’ve just got to see it some more. Roddy knows it. It’s on him. He knows that, too.”

With Beaubois backing up Darren Collison, there might not be any minutes for James on the final night of his deal. The Mavs must make a decision on whether to give James a guaranteed contract for the rest of the season or let him go.

Before Friday’s game, Cuban said there’s no reason to believe the Mavs wouldn’t keep James. Beaubois’ performance might have changed that line of thinking.

Carlisle and Cuban were both non-committal when asked if James would remain with the Mavericks after this game.
