Bernard James gets first career start

DALLAS -- The Mavs continue to pad their NBA lead for most starting lineups used this season.

Their 17th starting five of the season will feature rookie Bernard James at center.

Coach Rick Carlisle is searching for a solution at center. He benched Chris Kaman in favor of Elton Brand on Friday. Now James, the former Air Force sergeant, will make the first start of his NBA career.

"That's going to be day-to-day," Carlisle said. "I can't give you a definite answer on that."

The Mavs need a defensive presence next to Dirk Nowitzki, which is why Kaman has fallen out of the starting five. After not playing in the previous four games, four had four points and three rebounds in the second half of Friday's loss to the Spurs. Kaman played only 12 minutes in that game, none after halftime.
