DALLAS -- The Mavericks made a trade to acquire the 43rd overall pick and select Providence shooting guard Ricky Ledo.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Ledo never actually played for Providence. After bouncing around to several high schools, Ledo sat out his freshman season as a partial academic qualifier before declaring for the draft.

The Mavs see Ledo as an athletic, multi-skilled project with the potential to add scoring punch.

"He’s 20, but he’s got a big upside," president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said after the league office approved the complicated trade for Ledo's rights. "He’s had a little bit of a rough background, but he’s an extremely talented player and a good kid. He’s a good kid that deserves an opportunity."

The pick went from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Philadelphia 76ers to the Atlanta Hawks to the Mavs, who gave up the Brooklyn Nets' 2014 second-round pick which was acquired from the Boston Celtics in a trade earlier Thursday night.
