Role for Mavs in 2013-14: It’d be a bonus if Ledo, who didn’t play college basketball because he was declared ineligible at Providence last season, carves out a role with the Mavs this season. He should be the leading scorer for the D-League’s Texas Legends.
What happened this summer?: The Mavs acquired the 43rd overall pick to get Ledo, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard they see as a high-potential project. The four-year contract Ledo signed provides evidence of the Mavs’ commitment to developing him. He got $60,000 more than the minimum in his first season, and the Mavs guaranteed the first two years of the deal (almost $1.4 million), which is not required for second-round picks. In exchange, Ledo and agent Seth Cohen agreed to a four-year deal that the Mavs hope will be a bargain for the last couple of seasons.
What does the future hold?: The Mavs hope that Ledo, who has an intriguing blend and size, skills and athleticism for a wing scorer, will become a Chandler Parsons-type of value. The worst-case scenario is he’ll be an inexpensive gamble that doesn’t pay off.
Bottom line: This is a developmental season for Ledo.
