Rapid Reaction: Mavs 107, Magic 88

DALLAS – The Mavericks cruised to a 107-88 win Monday night over the lottery-bound Orlando Magic.

How it happened: The Mavericks handled their business against a bad team.

The Magic, who have lost by double figures seven times during their eight-game losing streak, briefly made things interesting by starting the second half with a 10-2 run and eventually cutting the deficit to six points. But there was no doubt about the outcome after the Mavs made 3-pointers on their final four possessions of the frame.

The Mavs had easy pickings offensively for most of the night. Dallas shot 50.6 percent from the floor, including 13-of-27 from 3-point range.

Monta Ellis led six Mavs in double figures with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Vince Carter added 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting off the bench. The other Mavs in double figures: Dirk Nowitzki (15), Jae Crowder (14), Jose Calderon (13) and Wayne Ellington (season-high 12).

Jameer Nelson led the Magic with 21 points.

What it means: The Mavs stand alone in seventh place of the Western Conference with their win and the Phoenix Suns’ loss to the New York Knicks. Dallas (23-16) went 4-1 during the stretch of five games in seven days. The Magic, who will contend for the top overall pick in the draft, dropped to 10-28.

Play of the game: Brandan Wright provided the exclamation point after catching a three-quarters-court pass from Crowder. Wright beat everyone down the floor in transition and threw down an emphatic two-hand slam dunk to stretch the Mavs’ lead to 15 with 4 minutes, 1 second remaining.

Stat of the night: The 3-pointer Nowitzki made late in the third quarter was the 1,400th of his career. He’s the 24th player in NBA history to hit that milestone.
