Rapid Reaction: Raptors 93, Mavs 85

A 21-point lead disintegrated as the Dallas Mavericks suffered a 93-85 road loss to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday with Dirk Nowitzki resting and watching from the bench.

How it happened: The Mavericks can look in the mirror and tell themselves they gave this game away.

Dallas committed 21 turnovers -- which the Toronto turned into 25 points -- and was especially sloppy in the fourth quarter. The Mavs had almost as many turnovers (nine) as points (12) in the final quarter.

Those transition opportunities helped Toronto's DeMar DeRozan score a career-high 40 points, but the Mavs had trouble slowing him down under any circumstances. DeRozan was 15-of-22 from the field, putting on a show that should help his case to make his first All-Star appearance and scoring the most points by any player against the Mavs this season.

Monta Ellis led the Mavs with 21 points and six assists while shooting 9-of-18 from the field, but he was helpless as a defender against DeRozan and committed eight turnovers.

Only two other Mavs scored in double figures. Brandan Wright and Jose Calderon both finished with 13 points. Calderon had 10 points in the first quarter, when the Mavs jumped out to a 34-15 lead.

The Raptors scored the first basket of the game and didn't take the lead again until Jonas Valanciunas' putback with 3:38 left.

The Mavs scored only one point in the final 3:23.

What it means: The Mavs, who have lost games in which they led by at least 17 points five times this season, fell to 25-19. They're tied with the Phoenix Suns for seventh place in the West pending the Suns' late game against the Indiana Pacers. The Raptors pushed their record over .500 to 21-20, good for fourth place in the East.

Play of the game: DeRozan's prettiest bucket gave the Raptors the lead for good with 3:38 to go. The Raptors' swingman made a sweet spin move in transition to get by Calderon on the baseline and finished with a left-handed, high-kiss-off-the-glass reverse layup despite being fouled. The free throw gave DeRozan a career-high point total and the Raptors a three-point lead.

Stat of the night: The Raptors pulled off comebacks from 19 and 21 points to sweep the season series against the Mavs this season.
