Rookie Bernard James never saw this coming

There's no doubt Dallas Mavericks rookie center Bernard James is one of the more unique players selected in last June's draft. In fact, the Air Force staff sergeant is one of the more unique players in the entire league.

Grantland.com writer Jonathan Abrams writes a thorough and entertaining piece detailing James' childhood, his big feet that didn't seem fit for sports, and the long and unlikely path he took to reach the NBA, a destination he never really dreamed of, or even thought much about, unlike almost every single one of his peers.

So how did the 27-year-old go from watching his brothers excel at sports in school to three tours of duty overseas as a member of the Air Force to Florida State to ultimately becoming the 33rd overall pick by the Mavs?
