When Dallas native Spud Webb entered the NBA Slam Dunk Contest at Reunion Arena during All-Star Weekend in 1986, no one thought the diminutive 5-foot-7 guard from the Atlanta Hawks had a chance. He's now one of the most famous contest winners in NBA history.

But it wasn't the first time that Webb had to overcome that particular obstacle to carve out a career and life in basketball that took him from the Wilmer-Hutchins High School JV team to Midland Junior College to N.C. State to the NBA, writes Tim MacMahon.
