Herschel Walker, one of the most controversial and well-known fighters in the sport of mixed martial arts, will make a return to the cage later this year when he co-headlines Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu II. The event is slated for Dec. 4 in St. Louis.
Walker, a former Dallas Cowboy who recently posed nude for ESPN The Mag’s second annual “Body Issue”, made his MMA debut last January against fellow newbie Greg Nagy. Although Walker was 47 at the time, he dominated the fight against the younger opponent, achieving the TKO win in the third round, thereby obtaining the first victory of his mixed martial arts career. The win came 13 years after retiring from football.
Strikeforce took quite a bit of heat for including Walker on the main card of that January event, effectively allowing the Heisman Trophy winner to leapfrog a long list of quality fighters more deserving of the exposure on Showtime. In the end, Walker turned out be a huge draw for the organization and likely introduced significant amount of fresh fans to the promotion. Whether we like it or not, it was a good business decision made by the organization.
An opponent has yet to be announced for the 48-year-old Walker. It’s not easy finding a well-known fighter, over 40, with similar MMA experience to the football great. Nevertheless, Strikeforce will surely want an opponent for the former Cowboy that has at least a little name recognition in the MMA world in order to appropriately capitalize on the opportunity.
