FC Dallas suffered a horrific meltdown against Toronto FC on Tuesday night and it cost them a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League knockout round. FCD's miserable second half of the season continued as their amazingly bright start in CCL play, when they became the first U.S. team to go unbeaten in its first five Champions League matches, now comes to nothing. FCD was also the first MLS side to defeat a Mexican opponent in Mexico when it defeated Pumas UNAM 1-0 on Aug. 17.
Toronto FC took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when a Dallas free kick was cleared out of the area to Plata and Julian De Guzman. Going around his defender at the end line, Plata centered a ball for Danny Koevermans who finished his second attempt after the rebound on his first came right back to him.
Toronto FC caught Dallas with another counter attack in minute 69. Ryan Johnson made a back-door pass to Plata slotted it home for a 2-0 lead. Plata netted his second goal of the match in the 81st minute, when he stole the ball from Jackson near midfield and broke in alone on goal.
