While Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park was a largely forgettable affair for FC Dallas and its supporters, there was something of a silver lining to come from that game.
All that lineup shuffling that FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman had to do in the wake of injuries to Fabian Castillo and David Ferreira plus the international absences of Carlos Rodriguez and Brek Shea allowed the Dallas gaffer to give George John his first start of the season at center back alongside captain Ugo Ihemelu.
It was definitely good to see a duo that has performed so well as a unit over the last two seasons back together, even in what was an extremely chippy game against KC. It was clear John still has some rust to work through after missing much of preseason and that the chemistry between he and Ihemelu is far from where it was before he left the club for a move to England last summer that fell through at the 11th hour.
“No, not yet. I think missing the preseason, it shows,” Hyndman said of the chemistry on the field between Ihemelu and John. “There’s a little bit of a breakdown in the communication but again, any time you play a team that is coming in with three strikers, it’s putting those defenders under a lot of pressure.”
Small steps now that the band is back together, and perhaps soon we'll see that Dallas defense of the last two season.
