United's Keane twins down FC Dallas Academy

FRISCO, Texas -- Call it one of those twin connections. Manchester United twin brothers Will and Michael Keane both scored for the Red Devils to down FC Dallas Academy 2-0 in their Dallas Cup opener Sunday evening.

Despite Michael being a defender, it was the third time this year the two have scored in the same game. The twins agreed that when it comes to the team, they don't really care who scores.

"We're just always looking for a win. It doesn't really matter who scores if the team plays well and we win," Michael said.

Will Keane, one of United's top young strikers, opened up scoring in the 10th minute with a wide-open goal from 12 yards.

Ryan Tunnicliffe almost added the second goal for United late in the first half, but his strike with FC Dallas keeper Richard Sanchez out of position went just wide left.

FC Dallas also had a few opportunities late in the first half, but keeper Samuel Johnstone and the United defense sent FC Dallas into the locker room down 1-0 at the half.

Keane's twin brother Michael added a header off a corner kick in the 52nd minute to cushion the lead for the Red Devils.

Danny Garcia almost shortened the gap in the 61st minute, but his strike from 10 yards with an open net went just wide right.

He had another another hard shot on goal in the 75th minute, but it was saved by Johnstone.

The Red Devils had a couple more opportunities late to add a third goal but couldn't capitalize. With goal differential as a factor in the same group as Tigres, who beat FC Dallas 5-0 in last year's Dallas Cup, United needs all the goals they can get.

"We're always looking to keep a clean sheet and score as many goals as we can," Will said. "We don't want to score a few goals and wrap up a game. We want to score more and more."

United brought just 13 players to Dallas, which may be a factor for a team that has to play just 15 hours after their win over FC Dallas.

"You could see after the game we did a lot of cool-downs," Will said. "After that we start preparing for the next game."

The Red Devils take on Santa Clara Sporting, a late entry, at 2 p.m. Monday on Field 7.

FC Dallas Academy plays Tigres at 4 p.m. Monday at Richland College Field 10.
