Former FC Dallas striker Jeff Cunningham has popped up on the soccer radar. He's in Guatemala where he recently signed with Comunicaciones, one of the two most successful clubs in a nation best known to Dallas fans as the country of former FCD forward, Carlos “El Pescadito” Ruiz.
Cunningham is playing for the archrival of the club, Municipal, that Ruiz donned the shirt for early in his professional career. And it was good to see the enigmatic striker score in his Guatemalan debut.
Cunningham’s time in Dallas was up and down, but he did still average a goal every other game (33 in 66 games) with FCD, which still isn’t bad at all. And that 17-goal season he had in 2009 en route to winning the MLS Golden Boot was a season most Dallas backers won’t soon forget.
Cunningham also ranks as the top goal scorer in MLS history with 134 tallies. Sure, it would have been nice to see him break that record in an FCD shirt, but when Dallas didn’t bring him back after the 2010 season, it surprised few.
It’s good to see him land on his feet and if anything, having Cunningham play in Guatemala this year gives Dallas supporters a reason to keep up with the goings on in that Central American nation. Good luck, Jeff.
