Stars down Devils, 3-1

The Dallas Stars improved to 8-3-0 on the season with a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils Saturday night at American Airlines Center. Kari Lehtonen made 31 saves and Loui Eriksson, Vernon Fiddler and Sheldon Souray scored for the Stars, who are now 5-1-0 at home. Fiddler’s goal with 8:26 remaining snapped a 1-1 tie and held up as the game-winner.

First period

The Stars struck first, getting a goal from Loui Eriksson at the 10:51 mark. After taking a pass from Steve Ott, Eriksson beat Devils goalie Johan Hedberg with a shot from the slot for his team-leading sixth goal.

The Stars almost extended the lead to 2-0 on a power play chance, but Hedberg made a big stop on an Eriksson bid from the slot.

Prior to the game the Stars honored GM Joe Nieuwendyk for his election to the Hockey Hall of Fame. After a highlight video of Nieuwendyk’s time in Dallas, the Stars presented him with a watch and a plaque.

Second period

The Devils drew even in the second period, getting a goal from Petr Sykora at the 12:00. After Patrik Elias beat Vernon Fiddler on a faceoff in the Dallas zone, Sykora got the puck and scored from the top of the left circle.

The Stars had a power play late in the period, had some chances but couldn’t cash in.

Third period

The Stars snapped the 1-1 tie with 8:26 remaining when Radek Dvorak go the rebound of a Sheldon Souray shot, put it behind the net to Vernon Fiddler and Fiddler’s centering pass attempt bounced off traffic and past Hedberg to make it a 2-1 game.

The Devils got a power play with 1:02 remaining, but Sheldon Souray scored into an empty net with 2.7 seconds left to make it a 3-1 final.
