Special teams were key in the first period. After the Stars missed on their first two chances with the power play, the Islanders scored on their first chance to take a 1-0 lead when Matt Moulson scored off the rebound of a Mark Streit shot from the point at the 8:55 mark.
Just 1:59 later Moulson scored again to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead. This time he banged home the rebound of a shot off the end boards by John Tavares.

It was a wild second period with the two teams combining for seven goals.
The Islanders made it a 3-0 game at 2:48 of the second when Dylan Reese scored off a shot from the high slot.
The Stars then scored three goals in a 2:03 span to tie the game.
A Stephane Robidas shot from the point deflected off Tomas Vincour and past Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro at the 3:27 mark.

Jake Dowell scored from the left circle at 5:30 of the second to tie the game at 3-3.
But 27 seconds later the Islanders were back on top when John Tavares made a slick backhand pass across the crease to Matt Moulson, who scored from the right circle for his third of the night.

The Islanders were back on top 1:02 later when Moulson scored his fourth of the game, finishing off an odd-man rush with a shot from the left circle.
Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro left the game with a groin injury and Al Montoya took over. He made 13 saves over the final 20 minutes to preserve the lead for the Islanders.
