Playoff watch: Stars jump to third in West after Phoenix loss

When the Stars and Canucks meet in Vancouver Tuesday night it will be a battle of division leaders. The Stars moved into first place in the Pacific Division and third in the Western Conference Monday night when the Phoenix Coyotes lost 2-1 in regulation at Pittsburgh.

The Coyotes had the division lead based on playing one fewer game and a better points percentage heading into Monday night’s action, but with the number of games played now even and both teams at 75 points, the Stars move ahead based on the regulation/overtime wins tiebreaker. They lead the Phoenix 30-28 in that department.

There’s a lot of hockey left and chances are they will be a lot of movement of teams up and down in the standings because it is so tight. The first chance at some of that movement will come Tuesday because everybody in the race is playing.

Within in the division Phoenix is at Columbus, San Jose hosts Edmonton, Los Angeles is at Nashville. When the night is over, the Stars still could be in third place or they could be in eighth.
